Kuta Bubbles

(As well as being available as both a paperback or a Kindle on the various Amazon sites, Barnes & Noble, etc, the book can also be ordered directly from my publisher, BookLocker, on: https://booklocker.com/books/8727.html. You can also read the beginning of the novel on either website.)

This was my second novel, originally published in 2009. It is very different from the first except for its country of setting, which is again Indonesia, although this time Bali, not Jakarta. It follows a group of older western gay drag queens in Kuta, the centre of the tourist action in Bali, and the mix of rent boys and younger Indonesian gay men there looking for fun, sex, love, escape and money. There is a murder mystery element to the story, but the real concerns of the book are the relationship between east and west in a globalised, post-colonial era and the way gay culture and history unfolded after Stonewall and Gay Liberation.

The publisher of my first novel did not like the manuscript I sent them and asked me to rewrite it. I did so, but they still turned it down. So I went down the self-publishing route and the book first came out in 2009. I came to realise, though, that my publisher had been correct and I wasn’t happy with the version that had been published and I wanted to rewrite it. After a significant rewrite, I self-published the new version with BookLocker in 2016, and I feel much happier with the version that now exists.

I tried my best to market the book and I managed to get a few reviews, some of which are listed below:

Reviews

‘… a darkly brilliant rumination on growing old in paradise … smart, spooky and thought provoking … Turn up the Dusty Springfield and lip sync along’

Jerry Wheeler, Out Front Colorado

‘Brayne layers a frothy tale with poignancy and dark intrigue, touching on the meaning of love, friendship, and integrity.’

E.B.Boatner, Lavender Magazine

‘ … great fiction, both poignant and refreshingly funny … well worth the read. It will certainly not disappoint … ‘

Sheryl LeSage & William Proctor-Artz, Bookends
